Kamala Harris & white liberals

I think well meaning white liberals should reflect on the types of reactions produced to VP Harris’s potential democratic presidential nomination.

The perception, for example, of her limited access to power and voter confidence based on race and gender over concern for this administration enabling apartheid and a personal prosecutorial legacy responsible for continued wrongful imprisonment of many people of color for marijuana possession, truancy, and guardianship of truants.

Are white democrats the Cassandra’s of liberalism, virtuously signaling support of women of color (and LGBTQIA2S candidates for that matter), not now, but when the time is right. Or do the warnings and gestures, symbolic of support, only exist in a vacuum. Each dyadic election, characterized by the same uninspired “lesser of two evils”  rhetoric posturing as exhortation, is actually a red herring belying unconscious and conscious biases purported to be the purview of the right.

I hope white liberals can lead a more self-examined democratic process, wherein the truth is revealed that predicting bias in fact mandates its manifestation.

Personally, I would like for eschewal of apathy, suspension of disbelief over Harris’s contradictions and room for excitement and hope that Kamala Harris and a progressive VP choice can imbue and deliver the full humanity, freedom, and democracy we all deserve.
